Romsdalshorn

When you see Romsdalshorn from the valley floor you can’t help but want to stand on the summit. It’s a classic for a reason: clean rock, an aesthetic line, and fjord-to-summit views. We’ll choose between the Normal Route via Halls Renne or the more exposed Nordveggen on the day, based on conditions and your ambitions. Expect a beautiful approach from Vengedalen, an airy ridge, then engaging but manageable climbing to a fantastic summit.

We start in Vengedalen, straight into a brisk uphill that warms the legs quickly. After roughly one hour the path narrows at a little notch locals call “Gapet”—that’s our kit-up spot: helmets on, harnesses clipped, rope out.

- Nordveggen (North Face) is the usual choice. It offers about six to seven short pitches of positive, well-featured climbing. Most of it is steady and flowing, with a couple of brief crux steps up to around

- Norwegian 5-. Expect 2–3 hours of actual roped climbing. From the summit we take in the skyline of Romsdalen, then begin a clean sequence of rappels and down-climbing back toward our approach.

There’s also the Halls Renne option from Vengedalen. The individual moves are generally easier, but the line feels a touch more committing overall and still demands the same careful pacing. We descend the way we came.

Day stats: about 900 vertical metres and a 6–8 hour round trip, conditions depending.

Who it suits: strong, sure-footed hikers who are comfortable with heights. Prior rock experience is helpful but not required—good coordination and fitness matter most.

If you’d like a confidence boost, I can run a short climbing intro the day before (movement, belays, clear rope communication). It makes the big day smoother and more enjoyable.
