Kirketaket East Ridge

Kyrkjetaket is a national classic for a reason: the normal route serves up a long, even-angled fall line that skis like a dream. For a truly standout day, climb the airy Østrygg (East Ridge) to the summit, then drop the normal descent—or, when conditions line up, the Vestrenna (West Gully). It’s one of the most spectacular ski tours you can do in Norway—memorable, elegant, and pure fjord-alpine joy.

Kyrkjetaket — Østrygg (East Ridge) to the summit

Route overview
The Østrygg is a slender, committing ridge that rises from the col between Kyrkjetaket and Kjøvskartind all the way to Kyrkjetaket’s summit. It’s a real ski-alpine line: skis on the pack, hands on the ridge, and sections that feel properly airy.

Conditions & skills
Best when the snow is firm and supportive for step-kicking, ideally with a few dry rock steps for secure footing. You’ll need winter climbing competence—comfortable moving with crampons and an ice axe, steady on exposed terrain, and used to carrying skis while scrambling. In these conditions, it’s one of Norway’s finest ski tours.

Windows often appear early winter and late spring, but we judge it on the day.
